Unique work - 2026 La Forêt. Rien n’est vivant qui ne s’éprouve. On la trouve cette inconnue aux choses, là où le vivant ne connaît langue ni langage. Je recouvre ce que j’ai trouvé.Je le regarde.Je prends du temps pour le regarder.Je le cache, je le mets derrière pour revenir le chercher plus tard.Quand ça sera le bon moment. La traversée doit continuer. Je saurai quand c’est le bon moment.Pour le moment, je ne le sais pas. C’est lointain. Une découverte émergera. Je lacère son écorce.Encore et encore. Cette chose qui était autre, devient encore autre.Pas autre chose, mais une chose. L’entièreté commence à émerger.Mais il est encore trop tôt pour le dire.Je ne suis qu’à l’aube de la forêt. Je vais devoir tomber, plusieurs fois.J’en souffre, et c’est comme ça que je sais. Que je suis sur le bon chemin. La forêt se densifie.Je dois continuer à chercher, longtemps. Je trébuche. Une lueur à travers les troncs de la forêt m’éblouit.Lumière jaune.Elle me réchauffe. Je fatigue, mais je continue, longtemps. Plus profond, je m’enfonce.La forêt est dense.Mon pas est lent. Mon geste s’intensifie. Il est vif. La lumière reparaît. Une charge physique s’imprime à l’orée.Je traverse. Et sur le chemin j’ai mué. Dans ces forêts, dans ces ciels, des bouts de moi. La forêt est épaisse.Lentement, j’avance. Je vibre et j’imprime. Cette lumière que j’ai peinte, passe à travers les arbres. Elle s’échappe dans la brume.Elle est douce. Parfois, elle m’embrasse et me réchauffe. Une nature colorée de sensations, teintée de vibrations. Les arbres s’agitent dans le geste, mouvants. Cet imperceptible beauté immanente à la fusion opérée avec la nature. Ces paysages abstraits, complexes, intenses exigent de se laisser toucher. Dedans. C’est du plaisir, et du déplaisir.Il y a de la jouissance à prendre dans ce déplaisir. Le bon endroit.Un endroit que l’on n’a pas encore découvert. Un endroit qui nous fait peur autant qu’il nous attire. This body of work marks a decisive shift in my practice: the entry into total abstraction, where black pigment ceases to function as colour and becomes a field of experience. The surfaces evoke something raw, almost organic — bark, earth, matter in an indeterminate state — without ever becoming descriptive. They hold. Black contains rather than conceals. It carries memory, tension, and what remains unspoken. Light persists, but never where it is expected. It emerges in fragments, through minute variations in the surface, at the threshold of perception. These works offer no clarity.They resist interpretation. They require presence. To stand before them is to encounter a certain instability, at times an unease — as though something held beneath the surface had begun to move. The painting does not reveal.It activates. It establishes a space in which the viewer can no longer remain entirely outside the work, but becomes implicated in the experience it produces. What emerges is not an image, but a state. A threshold. A territory in which perception hesitates and the distinction between inner and outer begins to dissolve. These paintings do not seek to be understood. They operate elsewhere — within the silent tension between what is seen and what is felt, between the material presence of the work and what it sets in motion within the person who encounters it. Something happens there. They unfold through successive layers — deposits of pigment, gestures, erasures — through which something gradually takes form without ever entirely resolving. Their surfaces inhabit the tension between appearance and disappearance. Between what emerges and what withdraws. Blue becomes a space of passage. A territory in which perception shifts, and the boundaries between the visible and the invisible begin to dissolve. Each layer retains a trace — of memory, movement, something that has passed through the body before reaching the surface. Nothing is fixed.Everything remains suspended. These works explore states that resist being fully grasped: moments in which thought hesitates, in which an emotion exists before language can contain it. They inhabit this interval. A threshold between presence and absence, connection and separation. The painting does not describe.It accumulates. Through matter, fragments of experience — memory, sensation, perception — are brought into coexistence. They overlap, obscure one another, resurface. The blues absorb as much as they reveal. They demand another temporality of the gaze. To stand before them is to enter a space in which time dilates and the image resists immediate understanding. Something appears, then recedes. Something remains without ever becoming entirely fixed. These paintings offer no answers.They establish conditions. They attend to what trembles, what shifts, what resists definition. The image never entirely settles. It blurs, dissolves, reconfigures itself, as memory does. Contours soften.Depth becomes uncertain.What is seen begins to slip away. Photography becomes a space of experience: a territory in which perception hesitates and the boundaries between the visible and the invisible begin to dissolve. What matters is not so much the subject as the act of seeing. Because looking is never neutral. What I perceive is already traversed by what I am. The landscape acts upon the person looking at it; in turn, the gaze transforms what it encounters. Each photograph holds this reciprocal movement. Between presence and disappearance.Between what is perceived and what is imagined.Between the world as it appears and the experience of seeing it. Time stretches.It becomes porous. The image does not resolve.It persists. These works inhabit the threshold where clarity gives way to sensation. They require a slower gaze, one that adjusts, searches, and accepts the possibility of not fully knowing what it sees. Something appears, then withdraws. Something remains, without becoming fixed. Photography becomes a passage. A movement from perception towards something more internal. From what is seen to what is felt, and, perhaps, back again. The image does not end at its surface. These paper sculptures emerge from a direct engagement with matter. Paper becomes unstable — softened by paint, brought to a state where it can be pressed, folded, shaped.It yields, resists, collapses, holds. The body is fully involved. The form is not designed.It is negotiated. There is a moment where the material remains open — still in motion, still undecided. Then it fixes. The surface dries.The form stabilizes. Something stops. Like a movement suddenly held in place. I return to the sculpture through pigment — throwing, depositing, guiding the blue across its surface. The color settles into the folds, reveals reliefs, creates depths. Light begins to circulate. These works exist in a tension between fragility and structure. Between what has been shaped and what still seems on the verge of collapsing. They carry traces of their own making. Pressures, hesitations, resistances. Nothing is entirely resolved. Each sculpture holds a state. A point where something has taken form, but not without fracture. The surface appears controlled, yet something escapes. A slight imbalance.A disruption. A memory of the gesture that cannot be fully contained. These pieces do not represent. They retain. They hold fragments — of movement, of contact, of a physical and inner negotiation with matter. They are not objects. They are situations. A sustained, repetitive movement, almost rhythmic, the trace of a pulse. Each line is at once deliberate and instinctive. It accumulates, layer upon layer, until the surface reaches such a degree of density that it begins to vibrate. Nothing moves.Yet everything is in motion. The drawings inhabit this tension. They produce a perceptual instability: the eye cannot entirely settle, the image refuses to remain fixed. What appears static becomes active. What seems silent begins to resonate. The lines do not describe.They register. They retain the trace of an inner movement, fragments of thought, memory, impulses that exist before language. Through repetition, the drawing generates pressure. A concentration. A field of intensity in which the gaze is absorbed and perception begins to shift. The surface becomes a site of tension between control and release, precision and overflow. These works exist at the threshold of perception. They bring into presence what ordinarily remains imperceptible: subtle oscillations, inner rhythms, the continuous activity of the psyche. Drawing becomes the place where these movements acquire form. A space in which the invisible insists on becoming perceptible. To stand before these works is to experience a displacement. The eye searches, adjusts, loses its point of stability. Something unsettles, then reorganises. The works do not simply ask to be looked at.They act upon perception. Stillness becomes movement. An inner state exists before we know what it is. It moves through us, inscribes itself somewhere within us, sometimes disappears again without ever having found a language. An inner necessity becomes form. Everything I create begins long before I enter the studio. Through experience. Through the observation of the living. Through what my body perceives, what moves within my psyche, what a landscape does to me. La Forêt is never merely a forest.VOID is never empty.My Invisibles have never been content with being invisible. I work from saturation. An excess of presence. A surplus of existence. Information, sensations, emotions and thoughts coexisting within the same space, at the same moment. Eventually, it has no choice but to become form. My work carries something of my whole interiority, my perception, my questions, my contradictions. My body is there too. There is a real physical intensity to my artworks. I do not invent images.I make them appear. I cover, erase, lacerate, accumulate, remove. I apply layers and layers and layers. I repeat gestures, marks, movements. An image disappears beneath another and sometimes returns months later, displaced by everything that has happened in between. I seek the form in which experience becomes perceptible. Repetition allows me to descend into what I perceive. It allows me to make the interiority of things appear, to make their density materialize. Something emerges before I know what I have found. The more I repeat, the safer I feel. The calmer I become. The deeper I can descend into this “thing” I want to give form to. It is repetition and time that create this fusion between me and my artwork. The more I repeat, the more human, the more alive the artwork becomes. As if the artwork were absorbing my intensities and keeping them locked inside itself. Repetition organises me. It regulates me. The more regulated I become, the more the artwork fills with my intensity. My vision is fragmented. An artist is, first and foremost, a way of seeing. Where someone sees a landscape, I see patterns. Details. Fragments. Repetitions. I observe the living world and what it repeats.&nbsp;Painting, drawing, photography and writing belong to this same enquiry. I observe masses, movements, light, reflections, the almost imperceptible transformations of landscapes. Looking is never neutral. What I perceive is traversed by what I am. The Same — or the impossibility of the Same? Why does the word “Same” even exist? A tree. Thousands of trees. A forest.A cell. Thousands of cells. A living being.A mark. Thousands of marks. A VOID drawing. Repetition makes something else appear. La Forêt is where all dimensions can converge. A year ago, I began building La Forêt as a mythological narrative. It is a real territory as well as a psychic territory. I bring into it what I live, what I observe, and what affects me, until the boundaries between outer and inner landscapes become porous. The forest doesn't move. Not like the ocean. The trees are grounded, they stay where they are. And yet, everything is very, very much alive. The light, the colours, the sounds, the scents are never the same, and I like to think that I can actually feel the trees talking to each other. In the forest, what happens underground influences what happens above ground, and vice versa. What is invisible acts upon what is visible. Just like the unconscious and the conscious mind. What happens beneath the surface shapes what appears above it, and both are constantly influencing each other. I paint it. I photograph it. I write it. I move through it. Every day it's different, and yet it's still the same forest. She is there. She stays. I think that's what I keep coming back to. The permanence of a place where everything is alive and constantly changing. Through creating, I discovered that the work did not end with me. It continued in the person looking at it. Something intimate and singular could become shared without becoming the same. All those repetitions, all those strokes, all that time, can have a hypnotic effect on the viewer. The same effect repetition has on me when I create. Except that I made it happen. I hypnotised myself. Through the work, two singular experiences meet. Something new emerges. The work remains physically unchanged, yet every gaze sets it in motion again.&nbsp; This is where my enquiry into human beings enters my work. For six years, alongside my artistic practice, I studied psychoanalysis, Transactional Analysis and psychopathology. I wanted to understand what happens inside us. How we construct reality. How relationships transform us. How one singular experience can reach another. I still do. Art is my first language. I want to understand why certain encounters transform us. Why certain forms awaken something visceral within us. How an intimate experience becomes shared. Whether art can create a form of connection between human beings that exists before explanation. I search. Every answer displaces the question. My text La Forêt begins with this sentence: « Rien n’est vivant qui ne s’éprouve. » Perhaps that is where my work begins too. A. “The universe according to Agathe Toman is a complex canvas moving so each invisible thread participates in its coherence thus guaranteeing an infinite multiplicity. Each thread allows when we touch it, to see and feel a particular harmony which is unknown, inimitable, unique. Creation is vibrating through an arpeggio of her expression; an encounter, a dream, a fleeting thought, an invented color, the skin that we barely touch, that we scrub, that we scratch, our skin, or the other’s, makes it echo and create symphonies that are perpetually new. You have to listen carefully. Discover futures, identities, and feelings that have no names or natures preceding them. Let yourself go. Become an echo room. Fight against the door that could shut before the intangible. Embrace, come out, welcome these emotions which are modulated from the brightest to the darkest. It is a discipline. She studied at the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne and worked for several years in haute couture before leaving fashion at twenty-five to devote herself entirely to art. She now lives and works in Seignosse, France. Her practice explores perception, inner experience and the living through a fragmented way of seeing. Painting, drawing, photography and writing are different territories within the same enquiry. Her successive series - Les Invisibles, FLUIDS, Bleues, VOID and La Forêt - trace the evolution of this research. Matter, repetition, saturation, landscape and the body become ways of investigating what takes shape before it can be named. Alongside her artistic practice, Agathe Toman studied psychoanalysis, Transactional Analysis and psychopathology for six years. Between 2025 and 2026, she also maintained a clinical practice, extending her research into perception, transformation and relation. In 2026, she was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder - Asperger syndrome. The diagnosis retrospectively shed light on a way of perceiving that had always been there: an intense relationship to details, patterns, sensory information and repetition. Since 2025, Agathe Toman has been represented in France by Mala Gallery on a non-exclusive basis. Her work has been presented at DDessin Paris (2018, 2019) and Art Paris at the Grand Palais (2019, 2026). Between 2021 and 2023, several works were offered at auction at Sotheby’s Paris and Cologne. In 2025, the BIC Foundation acquired one of her drawings. Her work is held in private collections in France and internationally. Poetry has accompanied her practice from the outset. In 2025, she published You Will Have to Learn to Smile Again, her first collection of poetry in English.
